Klay Thompson Announces He'll Return On Sunday

Jan 8, 2022 5:18 PM

Klay Thompson took to Instagram to announce he'll return to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thompson has been out for 941 days since tearing his ACL in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Steve Kerr jokingly said Thompson "forgot" to tell Kerr if he'd be available. Kerr encouraged the media to "keep your phone ready".

Kerr did confirm that Thompson will start when he plays, but with "less responsibility and fewer minutes".

'Strong Possibility' Kawhi Leonard Returns During 21-22 Season

Jan 6, 2022 10:14 PM

The return of Kawhi Leonard during the 21-22 season is a "strong possibility," according to Chris Haynes on TNT.

Leonard is "ahead of schedule" in his rehab of a torn ACL suffered during the 2021 playoffs, according to Haynes.

The Los Angeles Clippers have managed to remain in the playoff picture in the Western Conference despite the absence of Leonard this season.

Leonard re-signed with the Clippers during the past offseason on a four-year, $176.3 million deal. Reports have previously indicated that Leonard chose a longer term deal that would increase his odds of returning during the 21-22 season.

Zion Williamson Dials Back Rehab, Moves Location To Portland

Jan 5, 2022 2:50 PM

Zion Williamson will dial back the rehab of his surgically repaired foot to only partial weight bearing activities. Williamson is continuing his rehabilitation in Portland instead of New Orleans, but remains under supervision of the team.

Williamson has not played this season after suffering a fracture in his right foot that required surgery over the summer.

“Since we notified everyone on December 16 of his latest imaging, it was decided then by our medical team to dial his rehab back to only partial weight bearing activities. He continues along that path,” stated Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin. “We also agreed that in order to put Zion in the best position to succeed, he will rehab away from the team at this time so he can focus on the task at hand.”

“As you can imagine, this has been a very difficult process for me,” said Williamson. “I know there’s work to be done in my recovery before I can safely return to the court, but I will continue to put in the time necessary so I can get back on the floor with my team and represent Pelicans fans and the city of New Orleans at the highest level. Basketball means everything to me, and I am thankful for the Pelicans organization and everyone who has surrounded me with love and support throughout this journey – my family, friends, teammates, coaches, staff, fans, and everybody who has stood behind me and uplifted me when I needed it most.”

Klay Thompson To Have Minutes Limited, No Back-To-Backs

Jan 5, 2022 8:58 AM

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr still won't commit to a return date for Klay Thompson. But Kerr has some idea of his plans for Thompson upon his return.

Kerr said his "guess" is that Thompson will be limited to about 15-20 minutes per game. And that "there's a good chance" Thompson won't play both ends of back-to-backs. Kerr added this is as Thompson gets back up to speed.

There has been reporting that Thompson will return on Sunday after missing two full seasons. Thompson was initially out after tearing his left ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals. Then, during his rehab from that injury, Thompson tore his right Achilles. The two injuries have caused him to miss the last two full seasons, and almost half of the 2021-22 season.

Jan 4, 2022 5:27 PM

Joe Ingles has entered the NBA's COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The Utah Jazz were previously the only team without a player who had entered the protocols this season.

Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell were the first two NBA players to test positive for COVID-19 when the pandemic began in March 2020.

Jimmy Butler Exits Game With Ankle Injury

Jan 4, 2022 9:08 AM

On a drive to the basket late in the third quarter, Jimmy Butler planted his right foot awkwardly and went down in pain. Butler had to be helped to the locker room and missed the remainder of the Miami Heat's loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Butler was diagnosed with a right ankle sprain. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Butler will undergo further evaluation on Tuesday. Spoelstra said Butler turned his ankle, but added, "If you talk to Jimmy right now, he says he's fine."

Miami is already without 11 players due to injuries and the health and safety protocols. Four Heat starters missed the game against the Warriors, along with several key reserves.

Javonte Green Out 2-4 Weeks With Strained Groin

Jan 3, 2022 8:51 PM

Javonte Green will miss two to four weeks with a strained groin.

Green was inserted into the starting lineup after Patrick Williams' wrist injury and has started 18 of his 29 games this season, averaging 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 36.4% from 3.

When Green is on the court, the Bulls are 6 points per 100 possessions better compared to when he sits.

"Javonte has played really well for us and he's been great," Donovan said. "It is a tough loss. I think he's complemented that first unit really, really well.

"He's been such a big part of our team and has played so well, but we'll have to figure out different ways to try and make up his energy. I think in a lot of ways when you're playing as many games as you are, even the back-to-back against Indiana and Washington you need energy. He's one of those guys that provide it."
